What is difference between IELTS and PTE?

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and PTE (Pearson Test of English) are both standardized English language proficiency tests, but they differ in several key aspects:

  1. Test Format:
    IELTS:
IELTS is available in two formats: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. IELTS Academic is primarily used for university admissions and professional registration, while IELTS General Training is used for immigration and some vocational purposes. Both formats consist of four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
    PTE:
PTE Academic is a single test format suitable for academic and professional purposes. It also includes four sections: Speaking and Writing, Reading, Listening, and an additional section called “Enabling Skills.”

  2. Test Delivery:
    IELTS:
IELTS is a paper-based test for the Writing and Reading sections, and the Speaking section is conducted face-to-face with an examiner.
    PTE:
PTE is a computer-based test for all sections, including speaking, where you speak into a microphone, and your responses are recorded and scored by automated software.

  3. Scoring System:
    IELTS:
IELTS uses a 9-band scoring system, with whole and half band scores. Each section is scored individually, and your overall score is the average of the four section scores.
    PTE:
PTE uses a scoring scale from 10 to 90 points, with 10-point intervals. Like IELTS, each section is scored individually, and your overall score is the sum of the section scores.

  4. Test Duration:
IELTS: The total test duration for IELTS is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes, including the time for the Speaking test, which is scheduled separately.
    PTE:
PTE Academic is a shorter test, typically lasting about 3 hours for all sections, including the integrated Speaking and Writing section.

  5. Test Results:
    IELTS:
IELTS results are usually available 13 days after the test date. Test takers receive a paper-based test report form with their scores.
    PTE:
PTE provides faster results, typically within 2 to 5 business days, and test takers can access their scores online through the Pearson website.

  6. Test Centers and Availability:
    IELTS:
IELTS is available at numerous test centers worldwide, including Pakistan.
    PTE:
PTE is also offered at various test centers globally, including Pakistan.

  7. Acceptance and Recognition:
Both IELTS and PTE scores are widely accepted by universities, colleges, immigration authorities, and employers in English-speaking countries. However, specific requirements may vary by institution or organization, so it’s essential to check the requirements of your intended destination.
