The Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic is a computer-based English language proficiency test designed to assess the language skills of non-native English speakers. The test consists of several sections, each of which evaluates different language skills. 


PTE Academic is a computer-based test, and you will take it in a secure test center or from your own home (if you choose the at-home testing option).

Questions are presented on a computer screen, and you interact with the test by clicking, typing, speaking, and listening through headphones and a microphone.



Section 1.

Speaking & Writing (approximately 77-93 minutes):

  • Personal Introduction (not scored): You introduce yourself based on a given prompt.
  • Read Aloud: You read a short text aloud.
  • Repeat Sentence: You listen to a sentence and repeat it.
  • Describe Image: You describe an image displayed on the screen.
  • Re-tell Lecture: You summarize an academic lecture.
  • Answer Short Questions: You answer questions based on audio prompts.
  • Summarize Written Text: You summarize a written passage in one sentence.
  • Write Essay: You write an essay on a given topic.

Section 2.

Reading (approximately 32-41 minutes):

  • Multiple-choice, choose single answer: You choose the correct answer from multiple options.
  • Multiple-choice, choose multiple answers: You choose multiple correct answers from options.
  • Re-order paragraphs: You arrange paragraphs to form a coherent text.
  • Reading: Fill in the blanks: You complete a text by filling in the missing words.

Section 3.

Listening (approximately 45-57 minutes):

  • Summarize Spoken Text: You summarize an audio recording.
  • Multiple-choice, choose multiple answers: You choose multiple correct answers based on audio.
  • Fill in the Blanks: You complete a transcript by filling in missing words.
  • Highlight Correct Summary: You choose the correct summary of an audio recording.
  • Multiple-choice, choose single answer: You choose the best answer from multiple options.
  • Select Missing Word: You select the missing word in an audio recording.
  • Highlight Incorrect Words: You identify words in a transcript that are incorrect.
  • Write from Dictation: You write down a sentence based on an audio prompt.


PTE Academic scores range from 10 to 90 points, with higher scores indicating a higher level of English proficiency.

Each section is scored individually, and your scores are then combined to calculate your overall PTE Academic score.

Test Duration:

The total duration of the PTE Academic test is approximately 3 hours, including an optional 10-minute break. However, the actual test time may vary slightly depending on the combination of tasks in each section.
